Women's Wellness Q & A

What is women’s health?

Women’s health care is a necessary part of maintaining your long-term wellness if you’re a woman. During a well-women visit, Dr. Gilban conducts health screenings that focus on your sexual and reproductive system.

During a women’s health exam, Dr. Gilban may examine your:

  • Breasts
  • Cervix
  • Fallopian tubes
  • Ovaries
  • Uterus
  • Vagina
  • Vulva

Like annual physicals, women’s health exams are preventive in nature, and you don’t have to be experiencing symptoms to schedule a visit. Instead, you should keep these appointments even if you feel healthy because they can be instrumental in identifying early signs of certain women’s health conditions.

What does women’s health involve?

A women’s health exam varies based on patient age and medical history. Dr. Gilban may recommend screenings such as:

Pelvic exam
You may receive a pelvic exam at every women’s health visit. Dr. Gilban looks over your pelvic organs for signs of abnormalities, diseases, or dysfunction.

Pap smear

A Pap smear is a screening test for cervical cancer. If Dr. Gilban finds suspicious cells on your cervix, she may ask you to come back for a colposcopy. You need a Pap smear every few years starting at age 21.

Breast exam
Dr. Gilban examines your breasts and teaches you to examine your own breasts for lumps that might indicate breast cancer.

Mammogram
A mammogram is a screening test for breast cancer. Most women don’t need these until age 40 or 50.

Dr. Gilban may order a mammogram if she has any suspicions about your health based on her findings during your exam.

Which topics can be discussed during a women’s health appointment?

During your women’s health appointment, you can confidentially ask Dr. Gilban questions about your sexual and reproductive health. However, you don’t need to limit yourself to topics surrounding sex and reproduction.

Women’s health visits can cover topics like:

  • Birth control management and family planning
  • Breast health
  • Hormone replacement
  • Menopause
  • Menstruation
  • Pelvic health
  • Urinary health
  • Sexuality
  • Weight loss

Dr. Gilban can also help you manage conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or endometriosis.
